I think "hoodedandmasked's" comment "Intense" sums things up nicely.

This is one of the stories that I'm always pleased to find on the BDSM Library. It's short, it's sweet, it's well written. That said, there was still something about this story that put me off my game.

From a grammatical view point, "Deconstructing Amy" was well done. There were only a few minor errors, mostly typos actually, like "on" for "one" and such. Nothing major. The author used a good combination of compound and simple sentences that lent credence to the story and reflected the damaged mental state of the main character. The author choose to use a third person narrative with a character POV, which I felt was very well done. It was just far enough away from Amy that the author was able to elaborate on occasion, without having to deal with the difficulties a 1st person narrative would have created. That said, I would have LOVED this being in 1st person. Let me tell you why...

Amy is seriously fucked up. And by seriously, I mean "let get you to a hospital and checked out" seriously. In fiction fantasy, BDSM can be this extreme, but in the real world, anyone living like Amy is going to have serious problems, if not actually ending up hurt and needing medical assistance and mental counseling. The abuses that Amy inflicted on HERSELF were on par with some of the true life sexual tortures inflicted on victims of kidnapping and sex abuse. To be honest, the first half of the story actually revolted me because I was appalled by what Amy was doing to herself. I actually live the BDSM lifestyle with my wife jenni (as much as we can considering we've got four kids) and I couldn't imagine going this deep into the whole abuse and humiliation thing. Of course, to each their own and the beautiful thing about writing fiction is you can do whatever the hell you want in it! It's just a story! And a well written one at that.

I think the weakest link in this particular story is the timing. Like I said, I was almost turned off by the first half. In this particular case, I think too much was presented to the reader too quick. Had the author slowly pushed us into things, one thing at a time, with time to adjust to what Amy was thinking and feeling, I could have handled it better. One author I know of who writes similar stuff to this, likes to parcel it out piecemeal by accepting a torment, reveling in it, explaining how it makes her feel, and then is forced to endure ANOTHER round of torment, on top of the first. She cycles this until the end of the story, with occasional reminders of all the torments combined, which in the end seems overly incredible and horrific, but because we got there slowly, are not only able to accept it, but LIKE it! Had the timing of "Deconstructing Amy" been a little bit more stretched out to give the reader time to adjust to Amy's extreme self-abuse, this story would have been an easy nine, and quite possibly a ten.

It seems the author, Memento, is quite prolific, but hasn't posted anything in a long time, so I'll have to go back and read a few of this author's other works. I think they will be worth it.
